Is the Doctor Who Reference Guide still relevant in 2024, ever more so since not having been updated in over a decade?

When I started this project 25 years ago, Doctor Who was a beloved but dead show. There was no summaries or synopsis of any kind online. If you needed any information, you'll need to find it in books or magazines. The revival of the show changed everything. And brough so many new stories each month that it was overwhelming. I love British TV. I love the classic Doctor Who era. But I am not a fan of new Who. And at some point, it became clear that I would need a lot more skill than I had to keep it going.

Keeping the website alive cost around $250 each year. It's has not brought any revenue for many years since most the Amazon links are dead or outdated. The domain is up again for renewal in May, and the hosting is paid until then. What's next?

The most obvious option is to pull the plug and let the memory of the Reference Guide survive in the pages of the Wayback Archive. Another possibility would be to find a cheaper of free hosting company to lower the cost to a minimum. However, there could be programming bugs to solve since technology has changed a lot over the last decade. Or somebody could take over to either revive it or simply continue to maintain as it is.

One way or another, a decision must be made in the next two months.

Over the past several years, I have bought all my Big Finish audios from Mike's Comics, a U.S. based retailer that has always given me a great service.

Up to recently, Big Finish was supplying this retailers with the same promos offered to their online subscribers -- such as free CD stories, or the Big Finish Magazine, etc.. But now they've decided people not buying through their online service are no longer worth the trouble.

In messages posted on the forums at Outpost Gallifrey, John Ainsworth from Big Finish states clearly the new policy of the company:

Just to clarify a couple of points here. The BF Magazine disc is now exclusively for subscribers only. To receive it you must have a six or twelve month subscription that includes 'The Kingmaker'. It's true that in the past if you individually ordered a title with a free CD attached to it, you would receive the freebie. This is no longer the case. The same principal will also apply to the free story at the end of the year. You will need to subscribe to receive 'Return of the Daleks'.

Regarding the lack of 'Tomorrow People' material on the latest BF Magazine disc, the reason for this is that there will be free CD completely dedicated to behind-the-scenes on The Tomorrow People going out to subscribers of the next TP season. The CD will be sent out with 'Stemming the Tide'. We will also be doing a similar subscribers only disc for the new season of 'Sapphire and Steel' - details to be announced soon!

The Big Finsh Magazine CD won't be available through the shops, no. However, we may well provide a different promotional CD to the shops at some point in the future. Of course, if you like the Magazine CD you could always subscribe and receive a discount on your purchases at the same time (12 releases for the price of 10).

'Return of the Daleks' will probably be available to buy individually at a later date. However, this will be at least one year after its initial release to subscribers. So, no earlier than December 2007.

In my opinion, Big Finish is disregarding the loyalty of most of their most loyal customers with this move, and it's an enormous mistake. It seems Big Finish is on a path to testing the eventual abolition of retailers in favor of direct-only, web-only sales. I suspect they'll stop going further down that path only at a point where it doesn't work financially for them, and only then...they're taking it a step at a time for now.

I'd like to encourage people in the same situation to write to Big Finish directly (mailorderenquiries@bigfinish.com and bigfinish@easynet.co.uk) with their comments about their policy change.

I also invite you to order from Mike's Comics to show them support in their dealings with Big Finish. In the past, they've fight to get these bonus materials for their customers. They were also the first US retailer to have Big Finish audios for sale, and I feel their loyalty to the range and to their customers is being mistreated.

Over the pas several days, I have entirely revised the time-placements of the stories -- something I haven't really done for a long time and that was really needed.

I have also integrated to the main listing the comic strips published in Doctor Who Magazine, TV Action and TV Comics. I plan to add those from the annuals at some point in the futures. Ditto for the short stories published in Doctor Who Magazine and the annuals. I don't have much informations on the stories from the annuals, so any help would be welcome.

Following on an earlier story, I am glad to report that the Doctor Who Wikipedia Project has decided to follow the trend and listed the new Doctor Who episodes by serial.

Finally Michael H. Siegel has sent me a new synopsis for The Monster From Peladon, and Brendan Moody one for the BBV production Punchline.

As you have surely noted, I have made some welcome change to the main page. While it retains its original look, I have removed about a hundred small pictures that will I hope help to reduce the loading time.

Should the Doctor Who Reference Guide have a discussion forum? It seems that the answer is yes.

I have set up a forum on one of the proboards.com server as a trial basis. For now, membership is open without any limitations. I just ask people to behave.

The forum URL is: http://drwhoguide.proboards84.com. There's also direct link from the main page.

See you there!

18/01/06

Thanks to all those who took the time to vote in my numbering poll. It seems that's a highly debated issue, with no clear lead.

My first choice has always been for a serial numbering rather than an episodic one. Until recently, I was alone in that choice since Outpost Gallifrey and the Doctor Who Wikipedia Project were using episodic numbering. The people at Outpost Gallifrey have since changed their mind and are now using a serial numbering as well, which comforts me in my choice. Let's hope those at Wikipedia eventually follow so the three main portals show a unified front to the fandom on this.

I have set up a new poll about adding a discussion forum to the Reference Guide. It's something that has been suggested several times in the past, and I want to check if there is really a need or a wish for that. I am ready to go forward, but I'll certainly need help setting up and moderating the whole thing. Anybody wanting to comment or offer their help may email me at boies00@drwhoguide.com.
